Chad Michael Murray reveals he was given last rites during teen health crisis
One Tree Hill star Chad Michael Murray has shared a harrowing story about a near-death experience when he was a teenager. The actor, now 43, said that when he was 15 years old, he lost '50 per cent' of the blood in his body and was 'on [his] deathbed.' On Friday's episode of the Great Company podcast, he told host Jamie Laing that he was in the hospital for two and a half months. He explained that his intestines became twisted, and he was suffering from internal bleeding. He said he didn't remember much from that experience as he was going 'in and out of consciousness' and had to undergo emergency surgery multiple times. This comes after Murray opened up about his mental health and revealed he was battling agoraphobia amid his One Tree Hill success when he was in his early 20s. And at one point during his near-death, teenage experience, the Freakier Friday star said that he saw his father talking to a priest about last rites at one point before his nurse gave him a blood transfusion to save his life. He explained that his organs shut down because the blood coagulated around them and he had to undergo a second surgery to 'clean up' around them. The actor added that during those weeks in the hospital, his weight had dropped from 180lb to a 118lb. He also recalled the names of the nurses who saved his life - Sandy, who gave him a blood transfusion, and Alana, who was a model. Murray said that the latter nurse told him to become a model first to 'segue' into his acting dreams - and even followed through on her promise to introduce him to a modeling company when he got out of the hospital. About the conversation that got him into Hollywood, he recalled: 'Alana says to me, "Oh gosh, you should model." I was like, "I don't want to model. I want to be an actor. Like, I love film and television. I want to give this gift to other people." 'And she's like, "Well, you can segue from modeling into acting. Look, when you get out, I'm hooking you up with this modeling company I know." And she meant it.' A few years after making his recovery, he made his big break and started landing major roles in hit teen dramas. Murray is known for playing the lead role of Lucas Scott in the CW teen drama series from 2003 to 2009 and again reprising his role in 2012. He also starred opposite Lindsay Lohan in Freaky Friday in 2003 and in the recently released sequel Freakier Friday. He is also known for playing the love interest of Hilary Duff's character in the 2004 romantic comedy A Cinderella Story. The actor is also known for making appearances on Gilmore Girls, Dawson's Creek, and Riverdale. On the podcast, Murray also said that he is focused on clean living - avoiding alcohol and eating healthy - nowadays to stay healthy. He is currently on a promo tour alongside co-stars Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis as they promote Freakier Friday.

Chad Michael Murray's near-death experience
Chad Michael Murray was once so close to death, his family called in a priest to perform the last rites. The 43-year-old actor revealed he spent two months in hospital as a teenager when his intestines became twisted, which led to internal bleeding and Chad lost 50 per cent of his blood leaving him on his 'deathbed'. Speaking on the Great Company podcast, Chad said: 'I was in hospital for two and a half months. It was a lot. [I was] in and out of consciousness. 'We had surgery. I had internal bleeding, I lost 50 per cent of my blood. I was on my deathbed. 'I just remember seeing my father, the weakest I'd ever seen him, and a priest at the end of my bed. They're talking about last rites and all that stuff, and [the nurse, Sandy] gave me a blood transfusion to save my life. It saved my life.' Chad didn't reveal his exact diagnosis but explained he had to have a second surgery to 'clean up' his internal organs. He explained: 'Regardless, you're in there for two months and, you know, my organs shut down because you have blood all coagulated around them, and they had to wait till everything [healed more]. So, anyway, I had to have a second surgery to clean everything up. 'I went from, like, 180 to 118 pounds. I was a skeleton when I got out. I remember looking in the mirror the first time going, 'Who is that?' Like, I cried. I couldn't believe that I was looking back at that guy.' Despite his terrifying ordeal, Chad credits his hospital stay with helping his break into Hollywood, after one of his nurses, a model named Alana, encouraged him to take up modelling. He said: 'Alana says to me, 'Oh gosh, you should model'. I was like, 'I don't want to model. I want to be an actor. Like, I love film and television. I want to give this gift to other people.' And she's like, 'Well, you can segue from modelling into acting. Look, when you get out, I'm hooking you up with this modelling company I know.' And she meant it.' And, Chad credits his illness with bringing him and his father closer together. He said: 'I started my relationship with God, and my relationship with my father became really close. My dad [was] raising five kids on his own [and] came to the hospital every single day, and he spent countless nights with me when he had four more kids at home.'
